"If you go off into a far, far forest and get very quiet, you'll come to understand that you're connected with everything." - Alan Watts
We are Tierra and Dave, founders of Free Roots Farm, an non-certified organic vegetable farm/market garden located in rural Cape Breton, NS. We aim to provide affordable, accessible, and ethically grown produce to the community.
Originally from Halifax, Dave moved to Calgary, AB for a change of scenery. After starting his career in commercial construction he met and partnered up with Tierra, a marketing professional in the housing industry. Over time they tired of the suburban, working class lifestyle they had created for themselves and sold their house in the city, bought an old trailer and hit the road. They landed on Saltspring Island in British Columbia where they lived in their cozy camper and worked as WWOOFers on an organic permaculture farm and intentional community called Aloha Aina Farm. During their time spent working alongside the conscious community of musicians, dancers, visual artists, adventurers, travelers, philosophers, psychonauts, and everything in between, they realized that they too wanted to create the same sort of alternative lifestyle for themselves, so once again they packed up and hit the road. This time they traveled to Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia on the other side of the country and into an old abandoned farm house on 100 acres of mostly forested land, once owned by Dave's grandparents.
Today we work alongside the seasonal volunteers that come and go, growing nutrient-dense, delicious, and guilt-free food in the multiple garden beds sprawled throughout the property. Our journey has presented us with countless challenges and failures but it has also been one of knowledge, success, wisdom, joy, and purpose. We have learned that happiness cannot exist without sadness, nor success without failure. We embrace the ebbs and flows of life and always look for the lessons in all things, good or "bad". We have a long way to go still, but we've come a long way to get this far so we're gonna keep moving forward 'cause this farm ain't gonna grow itself!

Tierra grew up in Calgary, AB and entered the career world doing administration which eventually evolved into working in various industries as a marketing professional. At the age of 31 she gave up the glamorous life of fast paced marketing in the big city to become a humble farmer in Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, and then eventually Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia.
Tierra's greatest passions are absorbing music, witnessing and practicing kindness, compassion and empathy, and growing, as a human, an energetic being, and a farmer. Her favourite person to be around is her partner in life, love, and business, Dave. They have been together for over 10 years.
Tierra's hobbies include solo hiking, talking about the Beatles, dabbling in bits of artistic creation of all sorts when the mood strikes, being kind to people and providing a space-holding ear when needed, hiding from humans, working on being a better human, reading, writing, cooking, daydreaming.
Dave grew up in Halifax until the age of 20, when he spread his wings and moved to Calgary, AB where he met the love of his life, Tierra. He found a career in commercial exterior finish work. After obtaining a somewhat high level of success he began living a sort of white picket fence lifestyle that never quite seemed like the right fit.

Eventually he decided to leave his career and take a stab at being poor.
After a brief stint as a WWOOFer in British Columbia, he and Tierra crossed the country to take up residence in Dave's long abandoned grandparents house and start a farm. Fast forward a few years, armed with an arsenal of true grit and power tools, he has been the driving force of mind and muscle fueling the farms growth.
Dave's hobbies include playing guitar and writing music, reading, laughing, watching political and/or crime based shows and movies, also Point Break, being quiet and antisocial at times, constantly working at bettering himself.

He never let this get him down though, as he still loves humans and is first in line for a pet from anybody over the age of 5. He is about 11 years old now and although he is older, he doesn't let his age slow him down.
Lodi's hobbies include chasing rabbits for hours when let outside off leash. Also, searching for food. Cat food, dog food, human food, rotten food, it doesn't matter. Don't leave your plate unattended when this guy's around!
Lodi is also a very compassionate boy and could spend hours just being close to you. He senses feelings deeply and will come to anyone in need of some love. He can't stand to see people cry and at the first sign of a whimper he will be up and in your lap before the first tear finds your chin. He is a good boy.
Nuna is the newest member of the Free Roots Farm family. Joining us at just a few month old she immediately took to farm life, running around the gardens as soon as she was allowed to leave the house. Although she likes to go off on her own she is never too far and always comes to the sound of her name.

Joining us at just a few month old she immediately took to farm life, running around the gardens as soon as she was allowed to leave the house. Although she likes to go off on her own she is never too far and always comes to the sound of her name.
Nuna isn't much of a mouser but she loves to hunt birds which clearly shows she doesn't quite grasp the importance of avian population and biodiversity so her outdoor time is limited. She does however love other cats and dogs and is always the first to initiate play. Unfortunately she still hasn't figured out how to keep her claws in so watch out because a loving, purr-filled caress from her always comes with a gentle, slow-motion scratch.
Nuna's days are filled with laying by the fire on a cold day, looking for pets and snuggles, batting at Lodi to his dismay, and following you around the house. She is curious and kind and always has love in her eyes (unless you're a bird).
Hank was 3 years old when he joined Dave, Tierra, and Lodi's, family. Not much is known about him before then because he likes to keep his past life very private. Now at the ripe old age of 10 he has developed certain standards and expectations about how his life should be and his family does their best to accommodate.

Now at the ripe old age of 10 he has developed certain standards and expectations about how his life should be and his family does their best to accommodate.
Hank has very strong opinions about certain things and is not afraid to share. As such he is very vocal and demanding. He doesn't like to be disturbed when he is comfortable, he likes to be fed at specific times, really he doesn't like to have to wait for anything, but mostly he loves to be loved.
Hank's hobbies include chasing rabbits with Lodi, modeling, laying by the fire on a cold day, hanging out in the gardens with humans, greeting guests with excited barks, finding a comfortable spot and melting into it completely, and moaning for attention.
Fric joined the Free Roots Farm family at the age of 1, she has now spent 5 winters and 4 summers earning her keep on the farm. Originally employed as a mouser cat for the 170+ year old farmhouse, she quickly earned her place as a valuable member of the family.
Fric is a psychopath that does not discriminate against species when murdering.

Fric is a psychopath that does not discriminate against species when murdering. She is the reason you will find no bird feeders throughout the property. She is quick and efficient at her job and will make sure you are aware of her handiwork by leaving her kill as a gift for you in plain sight. However she also has a soft spot. She loves to be pet and cuddled and will roll around purring in the garden beds while you work.
Fric's hobbies are obviously, death and dismemberment, eating, sleeping, hiding under sheets while you're trying to make the bed, meowing to be let out, sticking her rear end directly in your face.
