We are looking for WWOOFers/Work Traders/Volunteers to join us for the 2021 growing season! If you are looking for an organic farming experience in the beautiful highland and ocean landscapes of Cape Breton then this is perfect for you. With spots available between the months of May through to October, we accept interns for a minimum of 1 week and a negotiable maximum stay. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn and a strong work ethic. If you would like to apply, please fill out the form below detailing your time frame, why you would like to work trade on an organic farm, and a bit about yourself. Please note that there are only 2 spots available at a time so this is a great opportunity for couples and friends, however we are happy to accept solo workers too! Also, despite our love for animals (we have 1 dog and 2 cats), due to past experience, we are no longer able to accept applicants with pets. We are also unable to provide working Visa's to out of Country residents.
Throughout the season we require help with prepping garden beds, seeding, transplanting, watering, weeding, mulching, harvesting, laying and removing tarps, managing the farm stand, washing, packaging and labeling, CSA deliveries, preserving, help with our Air BnB, art projects, building, painting, and other farm and homestead related tasks as they come up. Work days are about 5 hours, not including meal times, 5 days a week. We offer breakfast and lunch on work days, as well as free board, and provide our volunteers with dried staples and a selection of produce from the gardens.
Our mornings usually start with coffee, breakfast, and music while we discuss the day ahead. Lunch is around 12ish where we break anywhere from half an hour to an hour. We also expect everyone to contribute in meal clean-up.
If you are interested in applying please be sure to consider that farming can be hard work. It is important to note that the days can be hot and the work can be tedious. Please be certain that you are up for the task before applying.
We have room for 2 people in a private camper which has WiFi, electricity, and a stocked kitchen (kettle, cutlery, cooking utensils, dried goods, etc.). Couples and friends are ideal, however if you are a solo traveler you will not be expected to share the space. There are composting toilets, a communal fire pit and picnic area, and parking on the property. The shower is in the main house, but we are hoping to install a solar shower for the 2021 season.
Free Roots Farm is located in rural Cape Breton, situated between two small towns about a 25 minute drive away on either side of us. As such we require work-traders to have reliable transportation as there is no public transit. Our farm is located just a short walk to an amazing sandy beach with a wharf you can swim out to and a beautiful cape that offers breathtaking sunsets. Within a 10 minute drive of the property is another sandy beach, paddle board rentals and guided tours, a stunning river valley perfect for floating down, as well as the Cabot Trail. There is some great hiking to be done along the Cabot Trail and some even better, lesser known hikes off the trail. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to explore Cape Breton on a budget.
